Employers throughout Marion County are experiencing an unprecedented labor market. High turnover, wage fluctuations, economic factors, and social change are all contributing to the need for employers to think differently. Expectations on employers to offer “job quality” are rising and many organizations are struggling to find the right combination of actions to reduce turnover, offer a strong company culture, and be considered an ideal place to work. EmployIndy has heard the call and has instituted our Choice Employer program to help businesses address four main issues: Good Wages, Culture and Diversity, Employee Supports, and Career Pathways.

Through our Choice Employer program, we can help your business select the areas of focus that will help you improve your business practices in order to bring about positive change. Contact Lora Steele at [email protected] to get started today!

Good Wages Initiative

At a time when 1 in 3 Indianapolis residents lack money for basic needs, the Good Wages Initiative certifies employers that have every position earning at least $18/hour with benefits. A pay structure that considers the local economy and industry of your organization and exceeds average wages has been proven to help hire and retain top talent, as well as support a community’s economic stability. Collectively, wages and benefits should provide every employee with the ability to cover basic living expenses, save and build financial security, and increase their economic mobility.

Company Culture and Diversity

67% of job seekers say that a diverse workforce is an essential factor when considering companies and job offers. Utilizing strategies that focus on improving culture and diversity in an organizations’ culture create value to both employees and the organization. This transpires when the work environment is dedicated to respecting, listening, and working to understand one another, as well as ensuring workplace conditions are free from discrimination and harassment of any caliber. Our team is currently working on piloting strategies for racial equity with the National Fund and the Annie E. Casey Foundation. This pilot focuses on strategies that specifically impact young adults in or entering into the workforce. To learn more about how you could be a pilot partner, contact Lora Steele at [email protected].

Employee Supports

Due to the changing nature of relationships in the workforce, HR and executive leaders have an increased responsibility in supporting staff regarding issues inside and outside of the workplace. Providing on-site support for navigating work/life barriers can result in higher retention and productivity, yielding a return on investment for employers of more than 200%.

Structural barriers outside of the workplace have been shown to majorly impact an employee’s ability to be a productive and fulfilled member of an organization. It is important for companies to understand structural barriers that impact employees at all levels, and to provide internal resources and/or partnerships to help address such barriers. Barriers include, but are not limited to: access to food; childcare; housing; transportation; financial services and support; and other needs that promote a safe and stable livelihood. EmployIndy is now a licensed Employer Resource Network. We are accepting founding members and would invite you to learn more. Employee Support

Career Pathways for Employees

Continuous learning and training for employee development has been shown to reduce turnover and increase productivity. Companies of all types and sizes can support employees at every stage of their professional careers.  This includes crafting a plausible path to future careers within an employer’s organization or industry that is shared with each employee, based on their entry point and individual goals for growth.

Additionally, employers can provide workers with financial support and access to career coaching, whether that is through internal or external means. Transferable skills and on-the-job experience are also important for those that may move between companies and industries to continue to advance their career trajectory. Opportunities for growth in any career should always lead to meaningful work and job security amidst the changing economy.

TIF Training Grants

The funding for TIF Training Grants comes from the NextLevel Jobs program, overseen by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. These grantees are reimbursed for their work to hire, train, and retain Indianapolis workers. It removes the financial barriers that many employers face during the hiring process and allows them to provide opportunities for growth and employee success throughout the training process.

Story of Impact

Increasing Employer and Workforce Engagement

The vision behind NextLevel Jobs stems from the need to engage the current workforce and provide individuals with opportunities to grow within their company. In order to receive reimbursement for hiring and training, the employee must stay on for at minimum six months.
