This interactive experience is intended to be a visual representation of organizations involved in the Marion County Workforce Ecosystem during program year 2020-2021 to demonstrate the breadth and complexity of the local workforce system.
EmployIndy is recognized as a key, national leader in education-to-career pathways in the Intermediary Origin Story from Education Strategy Group; a Getting Smart Podcast highlighting the Modern Apprenticeship Program and work with Accelerate Ed to provide structured, supported pathways for students to gain real-world experience and college credits; a documentary produced by Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Midwest and Ball State PBS on innovative approaches to career-connected and work-based learning; and the New Skills ready network 2023-2024 Snapshot: Indianapolis, Indiana emphasizing the alignment of career-advising practices across the Indianapolis pathways ecosystem.

23rd Annual Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity Awards recognized Citizens Energy Group as the first Choice Employer awardee, a Good Wages certified employer that also focuses on supporting career pathways, culture and diversity, and employee resources.
Good Wages Initiative hosted first hiring fair, certified International District Community Center as 100th employer, and Howard Companies, Second Helpings, Feeding Indiana’s Hungry, and May’s Chemical are just a few certified employers who share their stories of improved success attracting, hiring, and retaining skilled talent that encourages a positive workplace culture and lower turnover costs.
EmployIndy Talent Connection placed 233 job seekers through personalized and customized support from recruitment managers.
Wednesdays@WorkOne connected 1,600 unemployed and underemployed job seekers to jobs with employers like Vesta Structured Family Care.
YES Indy launched Jr. Park Ranger Training with Indy Parks and Congressman Andre Carson’s office, supported Essence Gray and Josh Morrow while advocating for Opportunity Youth in Washington D.C., received a grant from the NBA Foundation, and celebrated Tray Stone who is building a path to prosperity with a new career in construction through YouthBuild Indy.
EmployIndy received the IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award for its Indy Achieves and New Skills ready network partnerships, which recognizes the dedication of organizations to support the IU Indianapolis campus.
EmployIndy supported MSD Warren Township’s college and career readiness framework and K12 with proven career-connected learning and advising through the expanding JAG Indy program, Talent Bound, and Project Indy.
Modern Apprenticeship Program honored the first completing cohort and MAP apprentice Cristina Llamas-Gonzalez at Plastic Recycling Inc. was awarded the high school Work-Based Learner of the Year.

As one of the fastest-growing industries in Indianapolis, Information Technology (IT) training providers are working to quickly and effectively upskill residents. Indianapolis has embraced the technological shift by investing in not just growing a pipeline of qualified workers, but by expanding infrastructure specifically targeted towards the IT industry and engaging with large employers, such as Salesforce and Infosys.

Many training providers offer these resources in the form of on-the-job training and apprenticeship opportunities in order to engross individuals in the field, model how to excel in their position, and engage them with employer partners.

Indy Achieves is an initiative of the City of Indianapolis and was formally launched in 2018. The mission of Indy Achieves is to remove financial barriers so all Indianapolis residents can obtain access to postsecondary degrees or credentials. Partnering closely with Ivy Tech Community College and IUPUI, Indy Achieves has provided gap-closing scholarships. Indy Achieves also works closely with the Indiana Commission for Higher Education in order to increase their 21st Century Scholars enrollments.

Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) is a national program, located in 14 schools across Indianapolis. JAG Indy not only teaches high school juniors and seniors how to be successful in the workforce, it prepares them for any postsecondary pathway and provides students with the opportunity to explore different industries and grow their employability skills. While JAG connects students to the workforce, it is also a prevention strategy by engaging young people who are at risk of dropping out.
In 2021, the Jobs for America’s Graduates program revamped their Career Development Conference (CDC) to take place in a virtual setting. This annual conference provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their career readiness skills that they learn throughout the school year.

Marion County houses eleven distinct school districts, and nine of these districts are engaged in at least one of EmployIndy’s programs, such as Jobs for America’s Graduates, Talent Bound, and Job Ready Indy. Many of these districts also offer adult education programming to assist residents in obtaining their high school equivalency, high school diploma, or an English Language Learning (ELL) certificate.
WorkOne Indy is the local American Job Center, providing job search resources for Indianapolis residents and dislocated workers in order to assist with re-employment. Beyond job seeker assistance, WorkOne Indy houses weekly workshops to assist individuals in increasing their skills and works closely with MSD Wayne Township to host adult basic education courses.

Project Indy is an initiative of the City of Indianapolis overseen by EmployIndy to engage youth between the ages of 16 to 24 in the workforce. The most crucial part of this initiative is that it removes the transportation barrier experienced by many young people. Housing thousands of full-time and part-time job opportunities, Project Indy is constantly expanding to fill the needs of employers as they hire for entry-level positions and to provide a hub of jobs for young people to explore.
With many young people working in the Hospitality and Tourism industry, the COVID-19 pandemic had a disproportionate impact on youth employment. While much of this was due to in-person regulations, it was also influenced by hiring freezes and fear of the unknown as coronavirus forced some employers to avoid hiring teens for summer jobs. During the pandemic, teen summer employment hit its lowest point since the Great Recession.

In 2020, Indianapolis was named one of five U.S. cities to be awarded a multi-million dollar grant to support career readiness and career pathways for young people. In partnership with education institutions, state and local government, and other workforce organizations, the New Skills Ready Network has a mission to create seamless pathways between K-12 and postsecondary as young people progress from education into the workforce.
These influential community-based organizations play a large role in supporting Indianapolis residents, particularly those in underserved and underrepresented areas. Many of these entities serve individuals from all walks of life – from single mothers to youth to those reentering the workforce due to previous justice involvement. EmployIndy has intentionally invested in these community groups to provide career and employment services and barrier-busting supportive services.
Employer-led partnerships include talent initiatives, industry-sector initiatives, and business-related non-profit organizations dedicated to ensuring the growth and prosperity of the Central Indiana regional economy.
The WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) outlines specific entities who fulfill explicit roles and benefits within the public workforce system (local one-stop delivery system) who are required partners responsible for administering the following activities: all programs authorized under WIOA; career and technical education programs under the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act of 2006; Trade Adjustment Assistance activities; Jobs for Veterans; employment and training activities carried out under the Community Services Block Grant and by the Department of Housing and Urban Development; programs authorized under state unemployment compensation laws; programs authorized under the Second Chance Act of 2007; and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families.
Adult education providers play an integral role in supporting residents, specifically those that are traditionally underserved and underrepresented. Many of these providers provide courses at a discounted rate or without cost in order to remove the financial burden that some residents may face when looking to advance their education level. They support adults looking to return to education to complete their high school equivalency, high school diploma, enroll in ELL courses, or explore career training opportunities.
YES Indy is EmployIndy’s opportunity youth-focused program managed by ten community-based organizations located throughout Indianapolis. Opportunity Youth are individuals 16-24 who are disengaged or disconnected from the workforce and education. This program concentrates on re-engaging young residents and also providing barrier-busting supportive services. To increase programmatic engagement and meet people where they are at, YES Indy launched YES Indy REC and the Power Huddle mindsets training program.

Job Ready Indy is an employability skills curriculum utilized by organizations throughout Indianapolis in order to upskill and inform the local workforce. This curriculum has been vetted and approved by the City of Indianapolis and the Indy Chamber to ensure local employers witness the value of the curriculum and the impact it can have in their workplace.
In program year 2020, the Patachou Foundation partnered with EmployIndy to incorporate Job Ready Indy into their “Food Fellowship” program. As a certified Job Ready Indy provider, the Patachou Foundation will be providing individuals with skills that will prepare them for any future career and job opportunity.
In May 2021, EmployIndy and Ascend Indiana formally presented the first cohort of Modern Apprentices, totaling 30 students who are engaged across six school systems and embedded at 16 groundbreaking Indianapolis employers.
