Students need more options after high school. And employers need more skilled talent.

Many students graduate from high school without a clear path to training that leads to a stable, high-quality career.

By expanding career-connected learning opportunities before graduation and beyond, we can better prepare Hoosiers for success and support the needs of Indiana’s workforce.

EmployIndy is uniquely positioned to help lead this work. For decades, we have connected employers, educators, and community partners across Marion County to create pathways that reflect the needs of today’s workforce—and invest in the opportunity that exists in every Indianapolis neighborhood.

Through apprenticeships, we bring learning and work together to equally benefit students, schools, employers, and our regional economy.

It’s a no-brainer. EmployIndy apprenticeships are an incredible model that gives us the ability to bring in students, train them—hopefully keep them—and give them a career.”

The Indiana Career Apprenticeship Pathway (INCAP) is a new option to help Hoosiers prepare for promising careers. Employers lead the pathway, ensuring students have the skills and knowledge to fill in-demand jobs.

Created by Hoosiers for Hoosiers

In 2023 a coalition of more than 300 leaders from business, K-12 education, higher education, government, non-profits and philanthropy came together to address Indiana’s education and workforce challenges. Led and funded by the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation, this collaborative effort launched INCAP.

Built by Indiana employers and educators, INCAP was designed to create stronger career pathways for students while helping businesses meet the evolving needs of today’s workforce.

EmployIndy connects students and schools to INCAP apprenticeships

In partnership with the Fairbanks Foundation, EmployIndy serves as the Marion County connector, supporting our students and schools, and connecting them to opportunities within several different industries.

If this sounds familiar, it should.

In 2020, EmployIndy launched Modern Apprenticeships (MAP), a pilot program funded by the Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation. Since then, EmployIndy connected 152 apprentices across 53 different employers. The partnerships, lessons learned, and proven practices developed through MAP — combined with inspiration from Switzerland’s vocational training system — helped lay the groundwork for what would become INCAP.

Today, EmployIndy continues that work by helping connect classroom learning to real-world experience for students across Marion County.

Employers across Indiana are leading INCAP.

INCAP offers apprenticeship programs in many of Indiana’s most in-demand industries, leading to rewarding careers and preparing our residents to power our future workforce.

Through Industry Talent Associations, employers help define the apprenticeship opportunities in their field so that INCAP students are prepared for jobs of today and tomorrow with experience that is valued among several different employers in that industry.

While each apprenticeship pathway is tailored to the needs of its industry, all INCAP programs are built around a shared framework, common expectations, and consistent student supports.

That shared approach helps schools, employers, and students navigate apprenticeships more effectively — from scheduling and coordination to training, communication, and student experience.

This is one of the key aspects that makes INCAP unique. Students will be ready for in-demand careers, and employers will have access to well-prepared talent.

Current and upcoming industries include:

Yes, depending upon the occupation selected. Once a student has selected their preferred apprenticeship program occupation with this scheduling option, they will work with their school counselor to build a high school schedule around when they need to be at an employer site and what classes they need to take at school, while still allowing for participation in sports and other extracurricular activities.

Employers build a diverse talent pipeline, reduce turnover, and invest in future workforce development—all with support from EmployIndy.

EmployIndy recruits students and education, coordinate with schools, and offer ongoing support to both apprentices and supervisors.

Students who complete the INCAP Apprenticeship Program will earn a high school diploma with the Employment Honors Plus Seal, as well as an INCAP Apprenticeship Program credential. This credential is recognized by employers and colleges, so the student has a choice for what’s next. They can enter the workforce and launch a career, knowing they have the option to continue industry-led education and training within INCAP.

Alternatively, they can attend college. Depending on the selected apprenticeship program, students may be able to complete a two- or four-year college degree in fewer years.
