LISC FOCUS Lunch & Learn: Commercial and Shared Kitchens

May 29, 2019 11:30-1pm – Commercial and Shared Kitchens: certifications/licenses, users, and real estate. How to help food entrepreneurs in your community and considerations for starting or operating shared kitchens.
Many neighborhoods are interested in opening shared or commercial kitchens to provide access to prep space for local food entrepreneurs. In addition to the real estate considerations, there are number of technical aspects that must be considered including the types of businesses who intend to use the space and where and how they will sell their food (farmers markets, food trucks, retail/wholesale, etc.) The Marion County Public Health Department, Dept. of Food and Consumer Safety will be covering the definitions of a Shared Kitchen and a Shared Kitchen User and go over the facility, equipment and Certified Food Handler requirements for a Shared Kitchen. The submittal and licensing process will be explained as well as the annual operating license fees required for these facilities. The City’s Food Policy and Program Coordinator will be on hand to discuss resources and programs available through the City and Indy Food Council that may be useful for food entrepreneurs. Develop Indy will also be attending to participate in the conversation around real estate considerations for these types of kitchen spaces.
Feel free to bring your lunch or grab lunch at City Market next door to us. We will have water available. We will be meeting in the 2nd floor conference room of the Platform at 202 E Market Street for these events.
Note: If you have trouble with street parking when visiting LISC’s office, the Denison parking garage located at 101 N New Jersey Street (at the northeast corner of Market and New Jersey) is a close and affordable option at $4/up to two hours.
